What if your family’s next Saturday night included music, movement, fresh air, and plenty of face-to-face connection?

Digitally Detached is bringing a free Latin dance class with music to the St. Pete Pier every third Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In coordination with RELPro Dance Promotions and The Dance Factory Tampa Bay, these welcoming community gatherings give St. Petersburg families a chance to put down their phones, learn something new, and enjoy time together in person.

No dance experience is required. You do not need to bring a partner. Children, parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors are all invited.

Why dancing together is good for families

Family bonding time does not have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes it is as simple as showing up somewhere together and sharing an experience.

Dancing offers families a chance to move, laugh, listen, and cooperate. A beginner may miss a step, turn the wrong way, or start laughing in the middle of the song. That is part of the fun. There is no need to be perfect.

A shared activity like dancing can help families:

  • Spend quality time together away from screens

  • Build confidence through small, achievable steps

  • Practice listening and cooperation

  • Enjoy light physical activity

  • Create positive memories in the community

  • Meet other local families and neighbors

  • Make movement feel fun rather than like a chore

Latin dance also encourages rhythm, balance, coordination, and body awareness. Families can participate at their own comfort level. You can dance with full energy, take breaks, watch the instructors, or simply move along with the music.

The goal is not performance. The goal is connection.

A screen-free alternative to digital attachment

Screens are part of everyday life. Families use phones to work, learn, communicate, manage schedules, and stay informed. The challenge begins when digital devices make it harder to be present with the people right in front of us.

Digital attachment can affect family routines and relationships in many ways. A child may have trouble stepping away from a game. A parent may feel pulled into messages during family time. Siblings may spend the same evening in the same home but in separate digital worlds.

These experiences are common, and they do not make anyone a bad parent or a bad family member. Digitally Detached believes that awareness is the first step. Families deserve practical, positive opportunities to reconnect without shame or judgment.

A dance night at the Pier is one of those opportunities.

When families come together to follow the music, they are sharing attention in the same physical space. They are seeing one another smile, encouraging each other, and responding to the same beat. That kind of connection cannot be fully replaced by a text message, video, or social media post.

You do not have to eliminate screen time to create healthier habits. You can begin by adding more meaningful, screen-free experiences to your family’s routine.

What to bring to Latin Dance Night

You do not need special equipment or expensive clothing. A few simple items can help you enjoy the evening:

  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move

  • Supportive shoes suitable for dancing

  • Water to stay hydrated

  • Sunscreen or a light layer, depending on the weather

  • A small towel if you expect to work up a sweat

  • An open mind and a willingness to try

Because this is an outdoor event, check the forecast before leaving home. The St. Pete Pier is a public waterfront location, so families should also plan for normal outdoor conditions, including sun, breeze, and changing temperatures.

Most importantly, bring the people you care about. Bring a child who needs a fun activity, a grandparent who enjoys music, a friend who has always wanted to learn salsa, or a neighbor who could use a welcoming community gathering.

You do not need a partner or experience

One of the biggest reasons people avoid dance classes is the fear of not knowing what to do. You may worry that you have two left feet, that you will look awkward, or that everyone else will already be an expert.

At our Latin dance nights, beginners are welcome.

The class is an opportunity to learn simple movements in a relaxed environment. Instructors and experienced dancers can help participants follow along, but you are always welcome to take things at your own pace. You can participate with a family member, dance with a friend, or join the group without a partner.

Children can learn by watching and copying. Adults can enjoy a new challenge. Older family members can participate in ways that feel comfortable for them. Everyone does not have to dance the same way for everyone to belong.

A welcoming community is one where people can try something new without feeling judged.

Supporting St. Petersburg and District 7 families

Digitally Detached is rooted in St. Petersburg, and our commitment begins close to home. With our headquarters based in a community redevelopment area, we care deeply about helping strengthen families and neighborhoods throughout the city, including District 7 and the South St. Pete community.

That means supporting activities that are accessible, inclusive, and centered on real human connection. It means creating opportunities for families to spend time together without needing to purchase a ticket, own special equipment, or already belong to a particular group.

Free community events can help make St. Petersburg a more connected place. They create room for neighbors to meet, families to build traditions, and children to see their community as a place where they are welcome.

Our Latin dance nights are one small way to support that vision. We hope they become a regular part of family life in St. Pete.

Make your next Saturday a real-world connection

There is always another notification, video, or message waiting on a screen. But the music at the Pier only happens in the moment.

Join Digitally Detached, RELPro Dance Promotions, and The Dance Factory Tampa Bay every third Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the St. Pete Pier. Come learn a few steps, listen to the music, enjoy the waterfront, and spend time with your family and neighbors.

You do not have to be a dancer. You do not have to bring a partner. You do not have to stay for the entire evening.

Just show up.

For families looking for screen-free family activities in St. Pete, this is a free and easy place to start. We look forward to welcoming you at the Pier.
